Title VII Extended Day Tutorial Program at PRES.

Title I Parent Advisory

Board Meets

The Title VII Extended Day Tutorial Program at Pearl River Elementary School provides students with assistance in reading, language arts, and math.  The purpose of this tutoring program is to enhance student learning and increase student achievement.  Children are selected for the program by test scores or by teacher recommendation.   The two tutorial classes are limited to eight students in each, so that the teachers can give more individualized help on basic skills and test taking strategies.  Hands-on learning resources such as the Frog Games are made available in the tutorial classes to practice specific skills.  Extended day tutoring takes place during the regular after school time frame.

The 2008-2009 Extended Day tutors at Pearl River are Cynthia Lauderdale, reading and language arts teacher, and April Brown, math teacher.  The first tutorial session will run from September 3 to December 17.  The second tutorial session will begin on January 6 and will continue through May 7.  The Title VII program coordinator is Mr. William Bell.

The Title I Parent Advisory Board, made up of parents from the six Choctaw communities, held meetings in September and October.

Board members elected Darlene Willis to serve as Chair and Connie Deon to serve as Co-Chair. Their term of office will expire August, 2009.

Two new board members, Chassidy Wilson, representing the Red Water community and Diana Ben representing the Standing Pine community, were welcomed to the meeting.

Parent board members have had the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with the following guest:

Dalton Henry, Education Service Officer; David Germany, Acting Director, Choctaw Tribal Schools; William F. Bell, Title I Coordinator; Natasha Phillips, Creative Services Coordinator; Sherry Tubby, Special Projects Coordinator; and Carolyn Carson-Sterling with New South Development.  For further information,  contact William F. Bell or Dianne Johnston.

OTC Students Give Back to the

Community

OTC students who participate in the building trades and the Youth and Community Apprenticeship programs built wooden outdoor furniture and donated a set that included a bench and two chairs to Lake Pushmataha and a set was also donated to Neshoba Lake. This gesture was part of OTC’s giving back to the community project.
